Bryn's 4th month was a big one and a stressful one. On top of selling the house and moving, she had a follow up sonogram to look at the spot on her liver. Her surgeon consulted with some of the other doctors at Children's Hospital and told us they couldn't be sure that the spot was benign so they sent us to a pediatric oncologist. Dr. Appel, the oncologist, suggested that Bryn have another MRI to capture a specific sequence of images that would help them determine if it is a hemangioma (benign) or possibly something more serious. They also did lab work to check her alpha fetoprotein levels. All infants have some alpha fetoprotein in their blood until they are one year old but high levels could indicate cancer. After a stressful week of waiting, worrying and constant prayer, we got amazing news. The MRI results look consistent with a hemangioma. Thank you God! Her alpha fetoprotein levels were slightly elevated but still in the normal range for an infant her age so they will continue to monitor those monthly and repeat sonograms on her liver every 3 months. If that wasn't enough for our little one, she also had to get a Doc Band. There are only a handful of places in the U.S. that have the specific type of band her pediatrician recommended. Luckily for us, Dallas is one of those places. Not so lucky for us, we just moved! We were able to get the process started before we left but will fly back and forth weekly for her adjustment appointments and at least it gives us a good excuse to visit family and friends!
